If you’ve ever been told your sacroiliac (SI) joint is “out of alignment,” you’re not alone. It’s one of the most commonly cited issues in chiropractic and physical medicine. Many patients walk into my Grass Valley office saying, “My SI joint keeps slipping out,” or “My chiropractor keeps putting it back in.”
But here’s the truth I’ve learned after over 40 years in corrective chiropractic care:
👉 The SI joint is often not the real problem.
In many cases, it’s a reactive, compensatory, and protective response to a deeper imbalance elsewhere in the body—most often in the lower lumbar spine.
And when you find and correct that core imbalance?
The SI joint almost always realigns itself naturally—without the need for repeated, forceful adjustments.
Understanding the SI Joint’s Role
The sacroiliac joint is where your spine meets your pelvis—a crucial crossroads that supports the entire weight of your upper body. Because it plays such a vital stabilizing role, it’s designed to move very little.
Yet, when something goes off balance above or below it, the SI joint often compensates.
It might tilt, rotate, or become slightly restricted to protect the body’s overall structural integrity.
So when I see an SI joint that appears “misaligned,” my first question isn’t:
“How can I push it back into place?”
but rather:
“Why did it misalign in the first place?”
That single shift in focus—from symptom to cause—is what defines corrective chiropractic care.
The Problem with “Chasing” the SI Joint
Many practitioners and patients fall into a pattern: the SI joint feels stuck, so it gets adjusted… over and over again. It might bring short-term relief, but the same imbalance keeps coming back.
Why?
Because the adjustment addressed the effect, not the cause.
When the lower lumbar spine—especially L4 and L5—is not functioning properly, it changes the mechanics of how the sacrum and pelvis move. The SI joint then becomes a victim of those altered dynamics.
Think of it like a car with poor wheel alignment.
You can keep rotating the tires (the SI joints), but if the suspension system (the lumbar spine) is off, the problem always returns.
In my decades of practice at Life Chiropractic, I’ve seen this pattern again and again.
Once we correct the primary dysfunction—often a subtle rotation or imbalance in the lumbar spine—the SI joints quietly and spontaneously settle back into balance.
Your Body Is Smarter Than You Think
The body is a brilliantly designed, self-correcting system. When something misaligns, it’s usually not random—it’s the body’s attempt to protect itself.
An “out” SI joint often isn’t a mistake; it’s a strategy.
It’s the body saying:
“Something up the chain isn’t right, so I’ll shift down here to keep us stable.”
If you rush in to “fix” that protective pattern without understanding why it exists, you risk fighting the body instead of working with it. That’s where true corrective chiropractic shines: we look for the reason behind the reaction.
Correcting the Core Imbalance
At Life Chiropractic, our process begins with a thorough assessment—not just of where you feel pain, but of how your entire body moves and compensates.
We analyze:
First, if there is a postural unleveling of the pelvis and a loss of healthy motion in one or both SI Joints, it indicates a Sacroiliac Misalignment. The next critical step is to determine what is causing the misalignment to persist. I look at a number of factors including:
- The alignment and motion of the lumbar vertebrae
- Pelvic and sacral biomechanics
- Muscular balance and tone
- Postural habits that perpetuate asymmetry
Once we identify the primary source of imbalance, we use gentle, precise corrections to restore normal motion and stability.
When the core problem is corrected, your body’s natural intelligence takes over. The SI joints—which were never “the villains” to begin with—often realign on their own as normal motion patterns return.
Patients frequently notice the difference:
The difference is almost always noticed immediately. There is a return of smooth effortless motion in the SI Joints when lifting the legs as in walking or marching. This also has other impacts…
- Less recurring tightness or “catching” in the hips
- Improved balance and gait
- Fewer flare-ups of low back or leg pain
- Longer-lasting results between visits
