Why You Need to Balance Your Autonomic Nervous System: Your Key to Less Pain, Better Sleep, Less Anxiety and Better Health

This week, let’s dive into what Nervous System Balance really means and why it’s so important for maintaining a healthy, regulated nervous system.  While nervous system balance is key to health, the most important aspect of your nervous system for health is your Autonomic Nervous System.

Why is that?

The Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) has connections to our internal organs and is comprised of two divisions:

  • Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS): often referred to as the ‘Fight or Flight’ system, this division responds to challenges, stress, and both real and perceived threats in our environment. The purpose of this division is survival. That’s good, but when it is continually activated it effectively shuts down many of the processes that support long term health and well being.
  • Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS): is often called the ‘Rest and Digest’ system because it supports healing, recovery, restorative sleep, healthy digestion, and a healthy immune response as well as human connection. When the Sympathetic System is activated the Parasympathetic System is correspondingly suppressed.

What is Corrective Chiropractic?

Corrective Chiropractic involves performing foundational chiropractic adjustments along with very specific exercises and practices designed to reconnect your body and brain by removing sources of interference and imbalance in the autonomic system. These adjustments are based on the areas of the spine that have the most influence on the autonomic nervous system—the areas where there is the greatest amount of influence on the autonomic system.

The upper neck and pelvis when misaligned tend to suppress the activity of the Vagus Nerve of the parasympathetic system. This is a reason why people often experience a profound letting go of stress and tension when these areas are corrected.

The mid back and lower back misalignments tend to increase activity of the sympathetic system. When the Sympathetic System is activated it promotes more muscle tension, more pain, systemic inflammation and it slows down healing and recovery.

By restoring balance, alignment and motion to the spine –  you help your nervous system receive the essential information it needs to function optimally

Why is a Regulated Nervous System Important?

Your nervous system is like a control center for your body. It coordinates all your movements and processes sensory information. When it’s well-regulated, it helps you move smoothly, feel less pain, and manage stress effectively. However, when the nervous system is out of balance—often due to a lack of movement or repetitive stress and a general feeling of being unsafe—it can lead to discomfort, stiffness, and even emotional stress.

How Does the Life Chiropractic Corrective Rebalancing Program Help?

When we are able to restore balance, alignment and motion to the spine and pelvis not only does pain tend to resolve but people experience a dramatic reduction in stress and improvement in a number of areas of health such as sleep, digestion, and immune function.

The Corrective Rebalancing Program consists of:

  • Corrective Chiropractic Adjustments: these release tension and interference from the nervous system by restoring balance, alignment and mobility to the spine and pelvis.
  • Spinal Joint Flossing: These gentle movements help reinforce the adjustments and maintain healthy motion.
  • Posterior Chain Activation: these simple yet powerful exercises activate and strengthen the primary muscles of posture.
  • Vagus Nerve Practices: these practices help strengthen the activity and function of the Vagus Nerve of the Parasympathetic System.
