This article is your one-stop place to get all your questions about Corrective Chiropractic Care answered.
Everything from the differences from traditional chiropractic to the advantages of correcting the underlying biomechanical and neurological imbalances.
Are you ready to start the Corrective Chiropractic learning journey? Grab a pen and paper! It will be a long one, but by the end, you will be a veritable chiropractic wizard.
What is Corrective Chiropractic?
Corrective Chiropractic is a subset of chiropractic where the focus is on first identifying the underlying imbalance(s) causing whatever challenge someone is experiencing. In simple terms, this means looking beyond where the pain is to find out how and where the body is imbalanced.
You need to remember that Corrective Chiropractic differs from traditional chiropractic in a few key ways and that is critical if you are looking to accomplish a couple of things:
- Long term pain relief
- Restored function
- Avoid or slow down the progression of arthritis
How does Corrective Chiropractic work?
Don’t worry, I’m not expecting you to understand the technical aspects of joint neurology or biomechanics. My goal is for you to become an educator consumer so that you are able to make an educated decision when you look for chiropractic care.
However, understanding the ins and outs of chiropractic and general and corrective chiropractic will help you find the best care for your needs.
First, think of Corrective Chiropractic as a combination of carpentry and electrical wiring
If you hire a carpenter to build out a small addition you want all the walls at 90 degrees with all the seams invisible. You want the windows and doors level. And, you want the electrical wiring done properly so you can plug in lamps and other electronics.
Next, You want that remodel to last as long as you own the home
Unlike traditional chiropractic you would like the results of your chiropractic care to be long lasting.
This is the biggest difference between Corrective and Traditional Chiropractic.
Traditional Chiropractic puts the focus on “moving the bones” with less concern over the smaller critical details.
The chiropractic franchise ‘The Joint’ is a great example of this. I know because I’ve been in a Joint office and watched them work. Just about everyone gets the same treatment each and every time. A lot of what is done really doesn’t need to be done and there simply isn’t attention to the small details.
This type of chiropractic can offer some short term pain relief but it will rarely correct the underlying problem. And, if you don’t correct the problem it will slowly worsen, even if you are not experiencing pain.
Here is an outline of the objectives of Corrective Chiropractic Care:
- Identify structural imbalances: are the hips level, shoulders level, head level. Determine imbalances.
- Locate misalignments of the spine where the spinal bones are out of position or not able to move freely.
Once that has been done the objectives of care are:
- Restore the pelvis and spine to balance – this alone takes tremendous stress off the spine, muscles, and nerves
- Correct misalignments of pelvis and spine with a focus on the areas most responsible for the problem
- Restore proper movement to the joints of the spine and pelvis
- Integrate movement patterns to reinforce the corrective adjustments
- Activate the Posterior Chain of postural muscles
Finally, the Focus is on Stabilizing the Correction
We live in a society in which the focus is on symptoms. I get it! Who wants to feel pain? But, that attitude has led us to relying on medications that only address the symptoms and do little to nothing for the problem causing the symptoms.
Not a week goes by that I don’t see someone with a big problem that has been neglected for years because the focus was on pain relief and not correction.
Pain and other symptoms happen when things are out of balance. If all you do is relieve the pain but do nothing to correct the imbalance you are actually doing more harm than good.
Not only will a corrective approach yield better short term pain relief, it will do much more to greatly reduce the likelihood of recurrent problems.
Why is Correction important for Pain Relief?
Do you really need corrective care to succeed in getting out of pain?
No! At least not a lot of the time. But, in the long run you are much more likely to experience nagging pain as well as:
- More regular flare ups
- Development of degenerative arthritis
Correction is so important because it removes a source of stress and imbalance in the body. This helps the body work better with less energy.
When you improve on correction, you have the potential to completely overcome your chronic problems, reduce your stress, improve your sleep, and much more.
As a result, you can:
- Do more of the things you live
- Sleep better
- Experience less stress and be more present at work, at home, at play
However, you must be aware that you have to do a bit of work to find someone specializing in correction.
In summary, corrective care has all the benefits of traditional care and much, much more.
How can I Find a Corrective Chiropractor?
Like anything else, finding someone of quality will take a bit of work and research. Keep in mind you are looking for correction but that is not the question you want to ask because everyone will tell you they do make corrections.
Here are a few ideas to start your search:
- Look at practitioner websites to get an idea of the language they use
- Ask people for referrals and question them about their care: did the chiropractor do an evaluation each visit, was there a corrective care plan, how often and how long did they go regularly…
Life Chiropractic’s Guides
So far, I’ve been covering the fundamentals of Corrective Chiropractic. It’s a different concept in our country as our entire system is built to address symptoms and illness with little focus on identifying and correcting the underlying problem.

Top Tip: We promise that if you are experiencing recurrent or chronic problems such as:
- Neck pain and headaches
- Arm pain and/or numbness
- Mid back pain
- Low back pain
- Sciatica
- Anxiety….
The problem over time will get worse. That might be more frequent pain. It might be more severe pain. It might be episodes that last longer and…
Almost all of these issues put additional stress on the joints of hips, pelvis, and spine that WILL cause an acceleration of the natural wear and tear of the joints and that results in degenerative arthritis, also called osteoarthritis.
The earlier you slow down or reverse the process the fewer problems you have over time. You need only look at the average person in their mid fifties, sixties, or beyond. Most are severely limited in their ability to be active. Many have had hip and/or knee replacement surgery.
Prevention is so much easier than treating conditions that cannot be corrected.
