Stop the Merry Go Round of Pain Treatments and Start to Correct the Cause of Your Chronic Pain

Chronic pain affects millions of people worldwide, significantly impacting their quality of life and daily functioning. Despite the prevalence of this condition, the current approach to pain management often falls short of providing long-term relief. The medical community’s focus has predominantly been on treating the symptoms rather than addressing the underlying causes of chronic pain.

The Symptom-Focused Approach

The vast majority of medical and physical therapy treatments for chronic pain are directed at alleviating the pain itself, rather than identifying and correcting its root cause. This symptom-focused approach has led to a “merry-go-round” of treatments that may provide temporary relief but fail to offer a lasting solution12.

Pharmacological Interventions

Medications play a crucial role in chronic pain management, with healthcare providers often prescribing:

  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Opioids
  • Antidepressants
  • Anticonvulsants

While these medications can reduce pain intensity and improve daily functioning, they primarily target the pain sensation without addressing its origin1.

Physical Interventions

Various physical therapies and interventions are commonly employed in chronic pain management:

  • Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)
  • Spinal cord stimulation
  • Radiofrequency ablation
  • Acupuncture
  • Massage therapy

These techniques aim to alter pain signals or provide targeted relief, but they often do not address the underlying cause of the pain1.

The Limitations of Symptom-Focused Treatment

The current approach to chronic pain management has several limitations:

  1. Temporary Relief: Many treatments provide only short-term pain reduction, requiring ongoing interventions3.
  2. Side Effects: Long-term use of medications, especially opioids, can lead to adverse effects and potential addiction3.
  3. Diminished Efficacy: Some treatments, such as opioids, may become less effective over time, necessitating dose increases or alternative therapies3.
  4. Incomplete Resolution: By focusing solely on pain reduction, other aspects of the patient’s well-being may be overlooked2.

The Need for a Paradigm Shift

To truly address chronic pain, a shift in focus from symptom management to cause identification and correction is necessary. This approach requires:

  1. Comprehensive Evaluation: A thorough assessment of the patient’s medical history, lifestyle, and potential contributing factors to their pain.
  2. Multidisciplinary Approach: Collaboration between various healthcare professionals to address all aspects of the patient’s condition.
  3. Personalized Treatment Plans: Tailored interventions that target the specific underlying causes of each patient’s chronic pain.
  4. Patient Education: Empowering patients with knowledge about their condition and the importance of addressing root causes.

Corrective Chiropractic Approach

Maybe you’ve done a search online for “chiropractor near me” or “local chiropractor” or even “Grass Valley chiropractor”. While those will certainly offer you a listing of local chiropractors it really won’t give you much actionable information to make an informed decision.

Much of chiropractic is not much better than medical care or physical therapy care if the focus is solely on treating your pain.

I can’t speak for other chiropractors but at Life Chiropractic in Grass Valley we take a different approach. My goal with every patient on every visit is to:

  • Assess whether or not their body, specifically their spine and pelvis, is out of balance.
  • Assess what I might be able to do to bring them back to greater balance.
  • Adjust the spine and pelvis in the areas responsible for the imbalance
  • Repeat this process each visit
  • Add to this other practices that support the body in returning to, and maintaining as good a balance as possible.

The spine is intimately associated with the nervous system and ALL pain is mediated and communicated by the nervous system. If we can restore greater balance to the structure of the body the result is improved function and performance and reduced or eliminated pain.

By moving away from the “merry-go-round” of symptom-focused treatments and towards a more holistic, cause-oriented approach, patients with chronic pain may finally find the long-term relief they seek.
