It should be crystal clear that the human body was designed to move. If we weren’t supposed to move we wouldn’t have so many joints and muscles to move each of those joints. 

According to research published in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) exercise not only reduces pain perception but also positively impacts mental health. 

Unfortunately in our culture we have been taught to avoid pain at all costs. Take a look at TV commercials and how many of them are directed at pain relief. The medication route to relief only causes greater long term damage to joints which increases pain. There is evidence that Non-steroidal Anti-Inflammatories (NSAIDs) can actually worsen the condition of joint cartilage. 

The reality is that the less you move the more you hurt. Sometimes that is unavoidable. If you have a hip or knee that is so arthritic that you are preparing to undergo joint replacement you are limited in your movement. But, there are always options for movement. You can try activities that put less stress on the joints like bike riding or swimming. 

Chiropractic’s Role in Movement Freedom

Chiropractic works both with the mobility of the joints, helping to restore more ideal joint motion; and with the nervous system responsible for the message of pain. 

The spine consists of 24 bones with 3 more in the pelvis. The spine and pelvis need to be balanced, aligned, and moving freely for the spine and nervous system to function with the least amount of stress or interference. 

When your spine gets imbalanced and you lose proper motion in the joints of the spine and pelvis it causes a domino effect of events that will lead to joint degeneration (arthritis) and pain…

  • Your nervous system will activate muscles in an effort to restore and maintain as much balance as possible.
  • Over time your body will compensate more and more in the losing battle to restore balance.
  • These compensations are most often the areas that start to hurt. 
  • The key is not to treat the compensations but to identify and correct the imbalances that led to the compensations.
