Are chiropractic neck adjustments safe? The facts, just the facts!

Let’s jump in with the $1 Million question! Are chiropractic neck adjustments safe?

Maybe you’ve been wondering. Perhaps it’s an issue that has caused hesitation in you or someone you know in seeking chiropractic care.

I have people who come to see me regularly who will tell me that their friend or spouse is afraid to come in. Almost always it’s the woman telling me about her partner that is afraid to see a chiropractor.

It’s a shame in general but the neck so often holds the key to unlocking many of the health challenges that people suffer from and resort to over-the-counter and prescription drugs for.

I have found the neck critical to solving challenges like:

  • Headaches
  • Neck and shoulder pain and spasm
  • Numbness, tingling, weakness in the shoulders and arms
  • Insomnia
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Anxiety
  • And so much more…

A Bit of History

The chiropractic profession was born almost by accident back in 1895 in the small town of Davenport, IA. A natural healer found that the custodian of the building experienced deafness after something had fallen onto his neck and upper back.

He noticed that a spinal bone appeared to be out of place and pushed it back into place and the man’s hearing returned. And, a profession was born.

Fast forward to the 1960s…..

The American Medical Association (AMA) was noticing the growth of chiropractic and felt threatened by the loss of revenue going to chiropractors. The AMA started spreading misinformation in schools, in the media, and to their member physicians, all in an attempt to squash the profession of chiropractic.

Sounds a bit crazy given the monopoly that the medical sickcare system has on the US healthcare system but it’s true.

A group of chiropractors sued the AMA for antitrust. It took 11 years but the Federal Court  judge in the case ruled that the AMA had engaged in a  “lengthy, systematic, successful and unlawful boycott” with the intention to restrict cooperation between MDs and chiropractors in order to eliminate the profession of chiropractic as a competitor in the United States healthcare system.

And, yet here we are with chiropractic flourishing.

I haven’t forgotten….

Is Chiropractic Safe?

The short answer is YES and that should come as no surprise, but let’s see what sort of factual evidence there is.

Let’s start by looking at death rates. That’s the ultimate failure or danger, isn’t it?

Did you know that…

But, wait a minute. How about the safety of the practice of medicine? Ready for a sobering statistic?

  • Medical Error is the third leading cause of death in the United States, killing at least 250,000 people each year, but that number is estimated to be as high as 440,000 people.

Maybe you should be afraid to go to the medical doctor! Or, at least quite a bit more cautious.

There are an estimated 12 deaths per year related in any way to chiropractic.

Money Talks

Perhaps you’re having a challenge swallowing this so here’s a bit more evidence. They say you can always follow the money. Let’s look to malpractice insurance rates for some insight.

Chiropractors have the lowest rates among all healthcare professionals.

Let’s look at Internal Medicine or Family Medicine in my state of California since they don’t do surgery.

As a chiropractor my insurance is less than $1000/year.

Despite the AMA’s attempt to squash chiropractic, the profession continues to grow and gain acceptance. It’s not because of all the slick national advertising. It’s not because of all the pharmaceutical advertising.

So, what could it be?

There is still a huge bias in the medical profession. They continue to mistakenly apply pharmaceutical answers to mechanical and neurological problems. And, yet we’re surprised that medicine is the third leading cause of death in this country.

But, THE FACTS…

Chiropractic is safe!

Judge for yourself. What has been your experience or that of your family, friends and co-workers?

I love the profession of chiropractic. I love that I can help people overcome chronic debilitating conditions not by adding anything to the body or removing something from the body…

…but simply by helping the body return to a state of greater balance.
