Have you ever used something because you wanted a specific outcome and found out that it offered benefits much greater than the outcome you initially wanted?
Maybe a skin or hair care product that was so much better than you could have imagined or…
A stretch that relieved more tension than you thought possible…
Chiropractic is a unique health care profession in a variety of ways compared to other professions.
- If you go to a dentist you pretty much know what to expect. Yes, there’s a range in skills and personalities but the majority of dentists do the same thing.
- How about a primary care MD? It’s the same story. Go in with a problem and walk out with a prescription.
- Orthopedic Surgeon? Pretty black and white, either you need surgery or you don’t.
Chiropractic is different! Very different! Are you seeking a chiropractor in Grass Valley or Nevada City, or anywhere for that matter? Then read closely because this might change the type of chiropractor you look for.
In fact it is likely what you don’t know about chiropractic that could make the biggest shift in your health.
Here’s a related post of mine: Why Chiropractic?
Match the Chiropractor with Your Goals
With chiropractic you can see a dozen different chiropractors and have a dozen very different experiences. Most of that is because of the differences in how different chiropractors practice and some of it is because of the limited understanding most people have of chiropractic.
Here are the two primary groups of chiropractors:
Pain Relief Chiropractors: this sounds fine on the surface but there are a number of significant drawbacks to receiving this form of chiropractic. First, the assumption is that relief of pain is the resolution of the problem. The reality is that:
- Problems cannot be corrected until after the pain is resolved
- If you stop at the point of pain relief you allow the underlying problem to continue to cause damage
- Long term damage includes the development of degenerative arthritis over 5 to 20 years that is irreversible
These chiropractors often use machines to help cover up the pain and interfere with the healing process. Some of the machines typically used include:
- Ultrasound
- Electrical Muscle stimulation
- Interferential current
Corrective & Balancing Care Chiropractors: this form of chiropractic seeks to not only resolve the pain but to correct, if possible, the underlying problem. By doing this your body is returned to a state of balance that minimizes the stress on your nervous system and joints.
The benefits of this form of chiropractic are:
- Marked reduction of stored stress and tension
- Greater long term ease of movement
- Improvement in other health issues such as:
- Digestion
- Sleep
- Menstrual cycle
- Asthma
- Blood pressure
- Anxiety
An overlooked benefit of Corrective Chiropractic Care is that it is almost always more effective at relieving pain than the pain relief chiropractor! How could that be? Corrective Chiropractic focuses more on identifying and correcting the underlying cause of the problem.
As an example, I rarely find the cause of a problem is where someone is experiencing pain. It is almost always above or below or to the right or the left. And, sometimes it is far removed from the pain.
As a chiropractor I understand how confusing this can be. Chiropractic has faced many challenges over its existence. I’ll bet you didn’t know that the American Medical Association (AMA) was found guilty in federal court of a conspiracy to destroy chiropractic.
The fact that chiropractic survived and is thriving is a testament to the results that chiropractic delivers on a consistent basis.
If you see a chiropractor or are interested in visiting a chiropractor the results that you get will depend greatly on what you want to get from your care and the type of chiropractor you visit.
What benefits are looking for with chiropractic care?
Are you interested primarily in short term pain relief at the expense of the long term health of your joints and overall health?
- If yes, then you should look for a chiropractor whose focus is pain relief.
Are you interested in optimizing your performance and your ability to participate in your life to the fullest extent?
- If yes, then you should look to find a corrective and balancing chiropractor.
4 Benefits of Chiropractic Care
Since the benefits of short-term pain relief chiropractic care are primarily limited to pain relief, we will focus on corrective care since the correction cannot take place until pain relief has been achieved.
What are corrective Chiropractors correcting?
- Nervous System tension, irritation, and interference
- Pelvic and Spinal joint misalignment
- Structural imbalance
Benefits of Corrective Chiropractic Care:
#1: Less Stress – Stress is processed by your nervous system. Unless the stored tension is released you progressively hold more and more tension and pain in your body. This results in increased muscle tension and pain, restricted movement, disturbed sleep and more.
#2: Better Movement – chiropractic restores proper movement to spinal joints and removes interference from the nervous system. Joints that move properly feel better and have less pain. You will feel greater ease and fluidity in your movements. This also reduces stress to the joints and avoids or slows the development of degenerative arthritis.
#3: Less Pain – the majority of people present to chiropractors seeking to resolve their pain. It might be headaches, neck pain, shoulder and arm pain, back pain, or hip and leg pain. The real benefits start once the pain resolves because that is when we can start to correct the longstanding imbalances that led to the pain. Correcting joint imbalances corrects the cause of joint degeneration.
#4: Better Body Function – as we balance the nervous system with chiropractic care the body functions better. Everyone experiences this differently. Some experience better digestion and a resolution of acid reflux, constipation, or ulcers. Others experience a lowering of their high blood pressure. Asthmatics often experience a significant reduction in asthma episodes.
Your nervous system is the master control system of the body. All of life is experienced through the nervous system. The goal of corrective chiropractic care is to bring the body back to balance so that we can remove interference to the function of the nervous system.
With less tension, irritation, and interference to the nervous system it is able to function better able to coordinate and regulate all body functions. After all, every loss of health is associated with some disturbance in the body being able to monitor and regulate itself.
